An Outburst

At the long journeys end
Men of songs assembled
To clap, cheer and dance for
A singer, who unexpectedly
Disappeared without a trace
Crossed many miles
Humming his songs
A laborer turned musical prophet
never faltered for a moment
preaching, sermonizing
feeding hope, he strode
In deep undergrowth
mowing down social mores
faded shreds of racial inequality
Painted peace
giving voices to the voices
in sloe-eyed summer dusk…
Rodriguez wasn’t aware
Godliness was so much
About external Sunshine
till Oscar came his way..

Elvis of S Africa
Take heart, oh good man
However grievous is your loss
The reckoners of court
Will surely calculate your gain
Return Royalties
With all fine points!

God is always right and just..

For Rodriguez, a singer-songwriter and supposed drifter known for performing in small clubs in Detroit, went on to become a mythic figure shrouded in mystery.

  1. Panchali, your words are a very fitting tribute to this man who accomplished much:

    “preaching, sermonizing
    feeding hope, he strode
    In deep undergrowth
    mowing down social mores
    faded shreds of racial inequality
    Painted peace”

    • Mary! …And you… write comments that make me feel on top of the world. May all writers be blessed with readers such as you… 🙂

      Thanks for the visit… 🙂

  2. We watched the documentary last night and we were blown away by his humility and gentle voice. Funny thing is he doesn’t want the money as he gives it away. Now its just his legacy and his music that are important ~

    • Yes, Grace. Even I heard his song for the first time, and …the very first para touched the chord….and this went till the last.
      Thanks for stopping by…

  3. I love your tribute to this man and his music,,so many wonderful lines.. “painted peace” is just one among many that I could have chosen,,,
